Basically, fashion is an important thing. When viewed subjectively, many people think that fashion is a way to express themselves and describe someone's character. In addition, with fashion, people can show the social class they have. However, fashion is not just a discourse on how to dress, but also a combination of various spheres of life such as business, trends and lifestyles. Fashion cannot be separated from its consumers. In other words, consumers are the driving force of the industry because apart from being buyers, consumers also determine and choose whether a style can become a fashion trend.
At the Jakarta Fashion Week 2017 event, the Minister of Industry, Airlangga Hartarto said that fashion is not only seen from the appearance sector as seen from the eye alone, but the fashion industry is the end of the chain of the textile industry which has high added value.
The importance of fashion makes us interested in writing this essay from another perspective. The perspective we use in examining this paper is to use George Simmel's perspective in seeing the importance of fashion.
As explained by George Simmel, fashion is a social phenomenon, called social action when individuals act to imitate (imitate) the way other people dress. This can be seen in the daily lives of many individuals who do the act of imitating other people's fashion. For example, such as the fashion that a king has in his clothes will then be imitated by the people. Actions taken by the people are called imitation which can be categorized into social actions.
The act of imitation fashion by this individual reflects the differences between the upper and lower classes in the choice of fashion. Simmel also believes that luxury fashion is usually different from low-end fashion. This is evidenced by the imitation by the people to the king. Where the people are described as individuals who have a lower class and the king is described as the owner of the upper class.
Fashion Is Important For Economy
Fashion is also important in the economy, as shown in the latest data, in Triawan Munaf's notes, the creative economy contributes 7.38 percent to the total national economy with a total GDP of around Rp. 852.24 Trillion. "Of the total contribution, the culinary, crafts and fashion sub-sectors provide the largest contribution to the creative economy," Triawan explained. The fashion sub-sector was recorded at 18.15%.
The importance of fashion for the economy because it involves actors in the fashion industry, such as involving the textile industry, designers, artists, celebrities, fashion bloggers who can provide income to actors involved in shaping the fashion and also contribute to providing job opportunities. This also proves Simmel's opinion that fashion is an inherent part of human social interaction that can create groups of designers, producers, or marketers and consumers.
So it can be concluded that fashion does not only want to show one's class, the form of one's self-expression but in fashion also involves economic action, namely making new fashion or fashions (production) that can change at any time, then disseminating it to the community (distribution) and society taking action. imitation (consumption). This action continues because fashion is changing every time.
